Beginner Heads-Up Poker Tournament Strategy

Heads-up poker is a lot different then playing a full ring game so you will need to learn a completely new strategy in order to be successful over the long run. If you’re new to playing heads-up tournaments then I would suggest taking the time to read through this brief guide which will offer you a lot of little tips on improving your heads-up poker game. The biggest trait you need when playing heads-up poker is that you need to be able to show that you can be aggressive or else your opponent will walk all over you.

Typically players will play heads-up tournaments because they love action and, by playing in heads-up tournaments these players are able to play a lot of hands. In order to beat these opponents you need to be selective about the hands you play. You don’t need to play a strict selection of hands because of the fact you’re playing heads-up and your opponent’s hand range could be anything. Always try to make sure that the hands you do play have a lot of draws preflop so that you have a chance of hitting the board.

The types of hands that are going to win most hands will be top pairs or a hit draw and you’re rarely going to see full houses or flushes taking down the pot. You need to be willing to call your opponent down when you’re sitting with top pair unless you think you have a read on your opponent. For instance, if your opponent only three bets 5% of the time and they are doing it against you in a hand then they probably have a monster hand. You need to keep analyzing these details when you play heads-up poker because it will help you put your opponent on a range which will assist you more in determining whether you have a chance of winning the hand.

You will want to make sure that you continually raise the pot throughout heads-up matches so that you can have control over the pots with your opponent. If you allow them to gain control over the pot size then you will be forced to follow their lead which isn’t profitable. You want to pick up the blinds as much as possible and you want your opponent to always be guessing. By raising every hand you play by 2-3X the BB then you will find your opponent will have a hard time putting you on a range of hands which is good.

A lot of poker players find that playing heads-up poker is a lot easier then playing full ring tables because you need to only analyze one opponent. You also have a better chance of winning money in a heads-up tournament then any of the other sit and go tournaments, which is always a good thing. If you have yet to play heads-up poker tournaments, then you could easily be missing some easy money depending on if you can follow some simple tips and execute them while you’re playing.
