Deep stack poker tournaments.
Deepst6ack tournaments are simply tournament where the amount of starting chips is very large compared to the starting blind levels for example if you were to start with 10000 in chips and only have blinds on 25/50 you could then afford 200 big blinds which is a massive number for online tournaments. Deep stack tournaments also normally have large periods of time between blind increases for example poker stars $22 deep stack tournaments blind levels increase every 30 minutes. It is these slight changes to the normally format that make deep stack tournaments a firm favourite with many of the industries professional players, this is because they can see for more hands due to decreased blind levels and increased intervals before these levels are raised .
An example of this is that if you are playing a conventional tournament where you have 100 starting chips first blind levels are 10/20 if you do not pick up a hand worth playing the first 30 minutes the blind levels have already increased to 50/100 leaving you severely short stacked where as in a deep stack tournament you will only just be entering the 2nd tier of blind which would on be 15/30, this means that players have much longer to be patient and wait for a premium hand to come along.
There is a different strategy that needs to be adopted when playing deep stack tournaments I will give a quick overview of the difference between a deep stack and a freeze out tournament but please do not hesitate to view our multi table tournament strategy to better you online tournament play.
Betting size: in deep stack tournament the size of you bet plays a bigger part in your play. in the early stages of a tournament if you get yourself a premium hand it is definitely worth trying to build up a big pot from it although it is unlikely that you will be able to take your opponent out you should definitely try to do so.
Don’t over commit: when you are sat at a table with a average hand you have to remember that the nature of a deep stack tournament means that you are likely to be dealt a “good” hand. So therefore don’t commit to many chips with average hands as this will hamper you when you eventually hit a premium hand.
Protecting hands: it is definitely worth protecting you premium hands during the early stages of a deep stack tournament you want to be looking to move in large amounts of chips to reduce the risk of lesser hands joining in on the action and outdrawing you on either the flop turn or river.
