MTT Play Part 3 - End Tournament Strategy
I would class the final stage of a MTT in tournament when you make it to the final table this ever more so important if you are in a tournament where only players on the final table get paid after all you enter the tournament to foremost win it but if that is not possible ensure you make a return on your investment it this case you could call the final stage of the tournament the moment you enter the paid positions and although that may be true, you do not want to start to adapt your play at this point as in some big tournament the difference from being paid to making it to the last table can still be a good 300 players.
So what is the strategy for when you make it to the final table as i touched upon in the previous article of the 3 part Strategy the closer you get to the paid positions the looser you should make your play as many players freeze up and try to hang on for the money making it easy for you to steal some pots and build upon your own chip stack, my advise to you is once you actually get into the paid positions. (In a big tournament) you see a lot of players who are low on chips start to make some wild plays, either to get lucky and double up or to get out of the tournament because they have made there money back at the very least. during this period of play I would advise against going in with these short stacked players unless you have Position on them and you are carrying a “premium hand”, you also do not want to be involving your self in multi- way pots with more than 2 short stacks as the odds of you taking them all out start to slim drastically
You only want to fully adapt your final table strategy once you reach the final table its self, hopefully with a sizeable chip stack once on the final table you again see players freeze, just as they did coming into the paid positions.
This is the time to play equally as aggressive as you did earlier on, however this time choose your opponents wisely. As unfortunately chip stacks do more of the talking than the cards you have in your hand during the final stages of a tournament, try to avoid playing against bigger or similar stacks to your own unless they are one of the players who has froze up and is letting them selves get blinded out, or equally if you have a very strong hand also try to avoid getting involved in multi way pots for the reasons I discussed earlier in the article as these could do you more harm then good let the short stack battle between them selves then pick them off at there weakest in good time.
In summary once you reach the final table you adopt a full final stage strategy, make sure you flex your Chip Stack, put all cripples all in at every viable opportunity, play some of your loosest poker and take calculated risks
